The Township of Papineau-Cameron, originally established in 1887, amalgamated since 1992, borders on the Ottawa River, stretching from the County of Refrew line on the east, south to Algonquin Park and the unincorporated Township of Boyd, the Township of Calvin on the west and by the Mattawa River on the north. The Township covers 54,451 square hectares.
Mostly developed along Highway 17, the Township's current population is 1,058 and the municipality is rural in nature. The Township has a mix of industrial, commercial, and residential with the main employers being Tembec Forest Products, GinCor Ltd, and tourist related facilities. There are cottages, cabins, and motels catering to the tourism market. The vast amount of Crown land located south of Highway 17, creates a playground for residents and visitors alike, for the snowmobiling, all terrain vehicles, hunting, fishing, biking, hiking, and nature lovers. Both vacant and developed properties are available and the infrastructure is ideal for new industry or commercial development. The Township is located along the Trans Canada Highway 17, has excellent municipal roads that feed onto the highway, CP Rail/Ottawa Valley Rail services are located beside the highway, properties have hydro and natural gas services, high speed internet access and low commercial/industrial tax ratios.
Future development besides a major industry would ideally be a mix of types of small industries, additional commercial developments, group homes, trade services such as electricians, plumbers, heating technicians, mechanics and accountants. Family farms have long faded away to rural residential development leaving large blocks of vacant lands. There is an abundance of farm lands, available at reasonable prices. There currently is an active equestrian club whose participants own many of the farms in the area and network with the many horse owners across the Nipissing area. New speciality farming such as emus, llama or quail is the new way of reviving the family farm. Aggregate and minerals abound but such development requires the approval from all levels of government.
The Official Plan encourages development along Highway 17 and alternate access off Township roads and designates an area for an Industrial Park off Highway 17. There are approximately 18 vacant/developed available properties that are zoned for Heavy Industrial and Commercial. The Official Plan permits small scale institutional uses although larger institutions are encouraged to located in the Town of Mattawa, where water and sewers are available. Home based business is encouraged for providing local service and as an incubator for new business development and expansion. All development must comply with regulations set out in the Zoning By-law.
New industry/commercial businesses may be enticed through incentives offered by the area, in order to create economic stability for the Mattawa area. Council is very receptive and open to hearing about any development plans, whether agriculture and/or small business. The Council has been elected to promote the Township of Papineau-Cameron and serve the needs of the community.
